Artist statement

I created Folsom Prison Blues in response to the word “cells.” Every two months the members of the art quilt group Cloth in Common create artwork based on a prompt given by one of the members. I enjoy creating interesting graphic elements and work intuitively to combine the elements, often curating these graphic elements into tidy rectangular containers suggestive of comic books and Chinese curio boxes. By stitching bits of fabric together, I created stylized jail cells of various blue colors connected via tangled pathways, stairs and ladders. I invite you to meander through the prison and discover the title hidden within its walls.

You can see work in progress images of my art quilts on Instagram and read more about this quilt on the Cloth in Common website.
